District Judge Jon S. Tigar Joins San Francisco Division

The United States District Court for the Northern District of California is pleased to announce that United States District Judge Jon S. Tigar, the court’s newly-appointed Article III judge, has joined the court’s San Francisco division.

Judge Tigar comes to our court from the Alameda County Superior Court, where he served as a judge from 2002 to 2012.  Before his appointment to the state court bench, Judge Tigar, a graduate of the University of California Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law and Williams College, was a partner in the law firm of Keker & Van Nest from 1994 to 2002; a trial attorney in the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office from 1993 to 1994; and an associate at the law firm of Morrison & Foerster. After graduating from law school, Judge Tigar clerked for Judge Robert S. Vance of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Judge Tigar was sworn in by Chief Judge Claudia Wilken on January 18, 2013. He will begin receiving cases from the assignment system in mid-February, including both new cases and reassignments from other judges. Judge Tigar will hold proceedings in Courtroom 9 on the 19th Floor. The court warmly welcomes Judge Tigar to the federal bench.
