District Judge James Donato Joins San Francisco Division

The United States District Court for the Northern District of California is pleased to announce that District Judge James Donato has joined the court's San Francisco Division, filling the seat vacated by the retirement of Judge James Ware in August of 2012.

Before taking the federal bench, Judge Donato was in private practice in San Francisco. He was a litigation partner at Shearman & Sterling LLP from 2009-2014; he was with Cooley LLP from 1996 to 2009 and Morrison & Foerster LLP from 1990-1993. He was a Deputy City Attorney in San Francisco from 1993 to 1996. From 1988-1989 he served as a law clerk to Judge Procter Hug, Jr., of the Ninth Circuit.

Judge Donato received his law degree from Stanford Law School in 1988, an A.M. from Harvard in 1984 and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1983.

Judge Donato was confirmed by the Senate on February 25, 2014, received his commission on February 26, 2014 and was sworn in by Chief Judge Claudia Wilken on March 21, 2014. He will begin receiving cases from the assignment system in late April, including both new cases and reassignments from other judges. Judge Donato will hold proceedings in Courtroom 11 on the 19th floor of the San Francisco Courthouse. The court warmly welcomes Judge Donato to the federal bench.
