Seeking Public Comment on Proposed Changes to Criminal Local Rule 6-2

The Judges of the United States District Court, Northern District of California, have approved proposed substantive modifications to Criminal Local Rules 6-2. Pursuant to Civil L.R. 83-2(b), public comments on the proposed modification may be submitted to media@cand.uscourts.gov until Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. PDT.

In proposed amendments to Crim. L.R. 6-2(b), substantive motions regarding grand jury proceedings are directed to the Chief Judge rather than the General Duty Judge, and the process for filing such motions ex parte, third-party filing, and unsealing motions is clarified. Stylistic changes were also proposed in 6-2(a).

Attached are redline and clean versions of the proposed amendments.
