There is a critical need in the Northern District for pro bono attorneys to assist self-represented litigants in civil cases. Each year, roughly 25% of new civil cases in the Northern District will be filed by pro se litigants. Volunteering through the Court’s pro bono programs provides a rewarding and impactful opportunity for attorneys to gain federal court experience.
- After you join one or both volunteer panels, you will receive periodic emails with summaries of available cases. Both limited-scope and full-scope opportunities are offered. Experience with a particular subject area is not necessary and some mentorship is available.
- Attorneys taking pro bono cases can get costs reimbursed up to $25,000 and recovery of fees may be available.
- Attorneys of all experience levels are encouraged to participate. Panelists must either have 5 years of federal court litigation experience or be supervised by an attorney with that level and type of experience.
- When accepting a case for appointment by the Court, attorneys must have Northern District admission or appear pro hac vice (the fee will be waived).
- Attorneys who would like to participate should submit our Pro Bono Interest Form
